Years ago, I met a family who had moved into my neighborhood. They were from Italy, and were delightful people. (And their cooking was fantastic!!) I was drawn to their yard anytime I saw them outside. You know the type of people I’m talking about … just plain nice!
But we had a problem. It was a language problem. They knew a little English, and were struggling to learn more. I knew zero Italian, and had no way of learning it except from some words I picked up from them. It was frustrating, to say the least. I felt I could help them in their new home, but many times I didn’t understand what they were saying, and so I was, in effect, helpless to help them.
Frankly, the problem was not all that common. We just didn’t see many people in our neighborhood, or even in our town, who spoke another language.
But today? Well, it is difficult to go through a day without coming into contact with several people who don’t speak English. As I write this, I am in a small restaurant near my home. And almost every employee is speaking in an “unknown” language.
My granddaughter is learning French in her school. A friend is taking a course in Spanish at a local community college. I have another friend who travels a great deal, and he is learning a foreign language. It is almost a requirement in todays world to be multi-lingual. But the problem is, how can I, with my busy schedule learn a language other than my own?
Well, I have found a wonderful series of Language Learning programs that seem to fill the bill completely! The Rocket Language Courses have everything. They are on-line, so you can take them with you, anywhere you go. They are conversational, so you learn to converse with others in a very short time. You are not bothered with things like conjugating verbs. You learn to speak the language naturally while understanding the culture and how the language works.
You see the words on the screen, and hear them from native speakers. You follow along, repeating the word or phrase, and it is amazing that even for someone my age (don’t ask, but they call me a Senior citizen), it sinks in and I find myself repeating the phrases quickly and easily.
And the series even includes some fun interactive games that help to improve the vocabulary and usage of words. The languages that are available are amazing: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Sign Language. And the price is very reasonable — much less than taking a course at the local community college.
So, I’ve found the answer to the problem. The question is, is this what you are looking for, too?
